Taupo Catfish Cull at Waitangi Weekend – save the date

The catfish cull at Lake Taupo will be a major spearfishing event this summer

There have already been some great spearfishing events this summer and there are plenty more coming up.

The annual catfish cull at Lake Taupo on 6 February 2021 (Waitangi Weekend) will be a major highlight. The cull takes place at Motuoapa, Lake Taupo and it’s one of the biggest spearfishing events in NZ, with typically 200-300 people competing to rid the lake of pesky catfish.

Spearfishing NZ has details of upcoming events.

Spearfishing NZ wishes everyone a safe summer of diving – but remember, always use a dive flag and always dive with a buddy! Also, everyone please take it easy burleying around the sharkier waters… it’s better if you make it home whole, with your fish in pieces, not the other way around.
