Underwater Hockey Championships

October was a big month for New Zealand underwater hockey, with the U18 Interzone Championship and the 2020 New Zealand Interclub Championships taking place.

U18 Interzone Championship

New Zealand’s top under-18 year old underwater hockey players took part in the interzone championship in Wellington on 24 – 26 October 2020 and for the first time in 20 years, Tauranga players were the victors. The trophy has always been won previously by teams from Auckland or Wellington and this is the first time it’s been won by a team outside these two main centres.

Congratulations to the Mid-Northern Boys’ team, which is made up of mainly Tauranga Club players, and also to the Under18 Women’s team from Tauranga, which performed well and was awarded a bronze medal.

Find out more about Tauranga's results at Sun Live.

2020 New Zealand Interclubs Championships

Thirty-three teams competed in the 42nd New Zealand Interclub Underwater Hockey Championships held in Tauranga 9 – 10 October 2020.  It was great for Underwater Hockey NZ to finally have a tournament after the seven events had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and there were excellent participation numbers, with 350 athletes taking part in 120 matches.
